Overview =========== Copyright (c) 1999-2004 Canon Information Systems Research Australia Pty Ltd Welcome to PhotoRecord, Photo Albums made easy. PhotoRecord automatically arranges photos into Albums with attractive frames and backgrounds. It provides great print-outs for digital photos. This Readme file contains last-minute product information about PhotoRecord 2.1 for Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Windows XP. Full instructions for using PhotoRecord are given in the on-line Help. This can be accessed from the Contents and Index item in the PhotoRecord Help menu. 2. System Requirements ====================== The requirements for using PhotoRecord 2.1 are: Processor: Pentium III 750MHz (recommended) Pentium 300MHz (minimum for Windows XP) Pentium 150MHz (minimum for Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3) Memory: 256MB RAM or greater (recommended) 128MB RAM (minimum for Windows XP) 64MB RAM (minimum for Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3) Display: 1024x768 pixels, High Color (recommended) 800x600 pixels, High Color (minimum) Disk Space: 100MB for installed files 200MB after installation for temporary file storage Note that on Windows XP and Windows 2000, unrestricted user status (Administrator privileges) is required to install and remove PhotoRecord. 3. Upgrading PhotoRecord from Version 1.x and PhotoRecord Gold ============================================================== PhotoRecord 2.1 will not replace an installation of PhotoRecord Gold. However, it may be necessary to install AlbumArt packs again to make them available with PhotoRecord 2.1. PhotoRecord Gold should function correctly with version 2.1 installed. However, Albums created with PhotoRecord 2.1 will not work with PhotoRecord Gold. PhotoRecord 2.1 will replace other older versions of PhotoRecord that were obtained with Canon products (printer, scanner, camera, etc). Albums created with earlier versions should open with PhotoRecord 2.1. Note that older Albums which are later saved with PhotoRecord 2.1 will no longer work with earlier PhotoRecord versions. 4. Restoring PhotoRecord Version 1.x after Installing Version 2.1 ================================================================= To revert to an earlier version of PhotoRecord after installing version 2.1, please note the following: - PhotoRecord 2.1 must be removed before running the installation program for an earlier version. See the instructions in this Readme for uninstalling PhotoRecord 2.1. - Albums created with version 2.1 will not work with earlier versions. - Artwork for version 2.1 may not work with earlier versions. 5. Uninstalling PhotoRecord 2.1 =============================== To remove PhotoRecord from the system: - Quit PhotoRecord. - Select START->[All] Programs->Canon PhotoRecord->Uninstall PhotoRecord. Alternatively, use the Windows Control Panel for Add/Remove Programs. 6. Limitations ============== 6.1. Using Photos at Full-page Size ----------------------------------- Some operations in the Album Window, such as selecting pages or accessing the page context menu (this appears when right-clicking on the Album page background), may be difficult when a photo covers the entire page. Several actions can be completed using the Page Navigator instead. Alternatively, try changing the size of the photo temporarily, or moving the photo to another page while doing the required operation. 6.2. Printing Large Albums -------------------------- An Album containing many photos and using artwork decoration may not start printing for quite some time. Using "Draft" print quality may cause printing to start sooner. However, the printed pages will not look as good. Printing may also use a lot of memory. Closing other open applications and creating extra free disk space may help avoid printing problems. Turning on Print Each Page Separately in the Edit->Preferences menu may start printing sooner and use less disk space. 6.3. Special Printing Functions ------------------------------- Some printer drivers have special modes such as duplex (double-sided printing) or N-up printing. PhotoRecord 2.1 does not directly support these features. If special printing features are enabled in the printer driver, PhotoRecord 2.1 may give unexpected results. If these cannot be disabled, turning off Print Each Page Separately in the Edit->Preferences menu may help. 6.4. Using Canon CP-series Printers with Certain non-Canon Printers Installed ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- It may not be possible to select a Canon CP-series printer from PhotoRecord when certain non-Canon printer drivers are installed. To use a CP-series printer with PhotoRecord, it may be necessary to remove the other printer driver. 6.5. Recoloring Page Backgrounds and Photo Frames ------------------------------------------------- Not all Album Page backgrounds, Photo and Text frames, and Clipart can have the colors changed (for example, the Wood Backgrounds). When an item cannot be recolored, the Change... button at the bottom of the Decorate Album panel becomes inactive. 6.6. Using CMYK JPEG and CMYK TIFF Images ----------------------------------------- PhotoRecord does not correctly display colors for CMYK JPEG and CMYK TIFF images. Most other JPEG and TIFF images will display correctly. 6.7. Copy & Paste from Other Applications ----------------------------------------- Images cannot be copied and pasted between PhotoRecord and some other applications. When an image copied in another application cannot be pasted, the PhotoRecord Paste command will be disabled. Similarly, images copied in PhotoRecord may not paste into other applications. 6.8. Copy & Paste Photos with Added Text ---------------------------------------- Selecting a photo to which text has been added and choosing the Copy command does not copy the added text. When the photo is pasted, the text will not be pasted with the photo. 6.9. Some Fonts Not Working -------------------------------------------- Some fonts may not work in PhotoRecord. The text may not be shown at all or may display using other characters. The MARLETT font is an example. 6.10. Using Custom Paper Sizes in PhotoRecord --------------------------------------------- Some printer drivers provide a 'Custom' paper size. Selecting the 'Custom' paper size in PhotoRecord 2.1 may give unexpected results. 6.11. Fetching Photos - General Comments ---------------------------------------- When fetching photos, PhotoRecord loads the original image or photo file from disk. It does not make a separate copy. Albums are NOT saved with the photo data. The Album records the location of the photos on disk. If photos or Albums are moved to a new location, or the disk with the photos becomes unavailable (for example, a CD which has been ejected), PhotoRecord will not be able to find them when opening the Album again. When creating and storing Albums and photos, the simplest approach is to always keep photos and their associated Albums in the same folder. 6.12. Sharing PhotoRecord Albums -------------------------------- In order for a user on another computer to view PhotoRecord Albums, PhotoRecord will need to be installed on that computer. The PhotoRecord version number must be at least as recent as the version that saved the Album. The images and the Album will need to be located on disk exactly as they were when the Album was last saved. 6.13 CP-100 Printer Driver -------------------------------------- To use a CP-100 printer with PhotoRecord 2.1, the CP-100 printer driver version number should be greater than 2.1. 7. Known Problems and Workarounds ================================= 7.1. Using Very Small Photos in the Album Window ------------------------------------------------ If photos in the Album Window are reduced to a very small size, the controls for resizing and rotating the photo may disappear or become almost unusable. It is recommended that any rotation or other adjustments be made before reducing photos to very small sizes in the Album Window. Selecting One Column or Single Page Mode from the View->Number of Columns menu may be useful for working with very small photo sizes. 7.2. Fetching Multiple Photos directly from Cameras --------------------------------------------------- A digital camera connected to the computer may be visible in Windows Explorer. The camera may then be seen in the PhotoRecord Fetch Photos dialog. Selecting two or more photos on the camera in the Fetch Photos dialog, and attempting to load them into PhotoRecord, may display an error message. The photos cannot be fetched in this manner. To work around this problem, the photos can be fetched from the camera one at a time. Alternatively, use ZoomBrowser EX to select the images and send them to PhotoRecord using Print->Layout Print... . 7.3. Copy & Paste for More than One Photo ----------------------------------------- If multiple photos are selected in PhotoRecord, using Copy, then Paste, will only paste one photo. To create copies of more than one photo, select the photos, right-click on one of the selected photos, and choose the Make Copies... command. All selected photos should be copied into the Album. 7.4. Copy & Paste Album Pages ----------------------------- Entire Album pages cannot be copied and pasted in PhotoRecord. New pages can be added to or inserted into the Album and dragged into position with the Page Navigator. Photos can then be fetched and moved onto the empty pages in the Album Window. 7.5. Copy & Paste Text ---------------------- Text boxes cannot be copied and pasted in PhotoRecord. To copy and paste text within PhotoRecord, right-click on the text in the Album Window and select Edit. Then select the text in the Add Titles & Captions panel, and press the CTRL+C keys to copy the text. To paste the text, right-click on the Album Page and select Add Text on the page to contain the new text. Finally, press the CTRL+V keys to paste the text into the empty Add Titles & Captions panel. 7.6. Entering Text ------------------ Text wraps onto new lines in the Add Titles & Captions panel differently to the Album Window. To place text onto a new line in the Album Window and the print- out, press the ENTER key (or SHIFT+ENTER) and continue typing. Use the ENTER key in this manner to control the width of text boxes. 7.7. Deleting Text ------------------ To completely remove a text box, right-click on the text box in the Album Window and select Remove. If an empty text box is required (for example, to insert hand- writing on the print-out), type one or more non-printing characters such as SPACE or ENTER in the Add Titles & Captions panel. 7.8. Recoloring Decorative Effects ---------------------------------- When selecting to change a Decorative Effects background, only the page background itself and certain Clipart can be recolored. To enable the Image Color controls, one of the images must be replaced with a recolorable Clipart item. Photos selected for Decorative Effects backgrounds cannot be recolored. The Image Color controls on the Change Background dialog will remain inactive. 7.9. Extremities of Text Clipped --------------------------------- Sometimes portions of text characters along the boundaries of the text box may appear clipped when seen in the Album Window. However, the full characters should be shown on the print-out. 7.10. Error Messages when Printing with Certain Non-Canon Printers ------------------------------------------------------------------ With certain non-Canon printers, error messages may be generated from the printer driver. These messages are dependent on the resolution selected in the printer driver (for example, high resolution such as 4800x1200dpi) and the Print Quality selected on the PhotoRecord Print panel. Your album pages will still print. To avoid these error messages, try a different resolution combination. 7.11. Printing to Acrobat Distiller ----------------------------------- Landscape pages will print rotated 90 degrees if printed to Adobe Acrobat Distiller to make an Adobe PDF file. The pages can be rotated back to landscape in Adobe Acrobat (full version). The setting for Print each page separately from the Edit->Preferences menu should be turned OFF for Distiller printing. Note that changing the PhotoRecord Binding Options may produce unexpected results. It is recommended that the printed output (PDF file) be checked before finalizing. 7.12. Running two copies of PhotoRecord --------------------------------------- If you are running two copies of PhotoRecord simultaneously, your computer may run out of system resources, and display an error. This only happens on some versions of Windows. If an error message appears, click OK, then restart PhotoRecord and ZoomBrowser. This situation can only occur if one copy of PhotoRecord was opened through the Contact Sheet Print option in ZoomBrowser. 7.13. Black Ink is Printed Across the Entire Page ------------------------------------------------- On certain non-Canon printers, pages may be printed out entirely black when using high resolutions (for example, 4800x1200dpi). To print at high resolutions, select the high resolution in the printer driver, but use the Standard Print Quality on the PhotoRecord Print panel. 8.
