Download SM56 Drivers
Updates are available as either a single file if your upgrading at your PC or two files (each
file fits on a floppy disk) if you're away from your PC. Each downloaded file is self-extracting
by double-clicking on the file.
To upgrade your SM56 modem, follow these steps for the Windows operating system:
Finding What Type of SM56 Modem I Have
- Select Start,
Settings, Control Panel from the desktop.
- Open the Control Panel
and double-click on the Modems icon.
- Click on the Diagnostics
tab.
- Click on the COM Port
assigned to the SM56 modem.
- Click on the More
Info.. button.
- Find ATI7. ATI7
indicates what SM56
modem you have as follows:

Preparing the SM56 Upgrade
Backup the Original Version
- Open Explorer and select File, New, Folder. Create
C:\SM56 Backup.
- Select Start, Find, Files or Folders from the
Start menu to locate SM56set.exe.
- Select and copy all the files in that directory to C:\SM56 Backup.
You now have a backup copy of your SM56 modem should you need to reinstall
it.
Download the Driver
- Download the driver for your modem and operating system. Right click on
the link for a desired driver file.
- Select Save Link As or Save Target As from the menu depending
on your browser. Download the self-extracting .exe file to the desktop or
files to floppy disks.
Note
- If the download is interrupted, repeat the above steps so
the files download without interruption.
- Double-click on the zipped .exe file(s) to extract the driver to
your computer's hard drive.
- In the Unzip to Folder box, type C:\SM56 Drivers or another folder
name. Click Unzip. WinZip creates the directory for you and confirms
when the files have been extracted. Click Close.
- Go to C:\SM56 Drivers or other folder using Explorer and double-click on
SM56set.exe. A dialog box appears having detected the previous SM56
modem.
- Click Yes to proceed with the upgrade. A message box appears displaying
where you can find a second copy of the previous SM56 modem.
- Click OK. After the SM56 software upgrade is installed a dialog box
appears.
- Click Yes to reboot your computer.
Your PC will recognize your existing modem as new hardware. To complete the
upgrade and configure your system to recognize the modem, proceed to the next
section.
Installing the SM56 Driver
Backup the Original Version

Reinstalling the SM56 Driver (if needed)
If a problem occurs while upgrading your SM56 modem, such as a power loss,
reinstall the original driver so you can continue to use your modem.
- Open the Control Panel. Select Add/Remove Programs.
- Click on SM56 Modem and then click on Add/Remove. The uninstall
program starts running. If SM56 Modem in not listed, then skip step 3.
- Close all open windows and restart the computer.
- Find the original driver in C:\SM56 Backup. Click SM56set.exe.

NOTE: If you have an SM56 Voice Modem
(data/fax modem with an answering machine), download a compatible SM56 Speakerphone
driver.
Your SM56 modem is one of two types of modems, depending on its features, and is
compatable with the following operating systems:

- SM56 Software Speakerphone Modem (Data/Fax/Voice)

System Requirements, Installation, and Technical Support
Read this IMPORTANT information before downloading.
System Requirements
The driver has been tested only with Red Hat 7.1, which requires
a Linux kernel V2.4 and is not backwardly compatible with V2.2. This
driver supports AMR (Intel chipset only), PCI I, and PCI II hardware platforms.
System requirements are otherwise the same as for PCI modems.
NOTE: To maximize modem performance, enable Direct Memory Access
(DMA) for your Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard drives. Enabling DMA
on your system may require an 80-pin cable for your IDE drives. Please consult
your PC manufacturer or system documentation.
The SM56 Linux driver does not support Symmetric MultiProcessing
(SMP) or concurrent processing by multiple processors.
Upgrade
To upgrade the SM56 Linux driver, first remove the previous RPM and then install
the current version. To remove the previous RPM issue the following command
logged in as root:
#rpm -e sm56
Installation
To install the driver, copy the RPM file to your system and issue
the following commands logged in as root:
#rpm -Uvh sm56-85.1-10.i386.rpm
#sm56setup [country-code]
The default country code is the United States. See the SM56 manpage for a list
of valid country codes.
Technical Support
While we provide a fully functional SM56 data/fax softmodem for Linux,
no customer support is available for this driver. Use it at your own discretion.
